Car accident can result in a torn meniscus

A car accident can cause a wide variety of injuries. Although many of these injuries by themselves are relatively minor, the accumulation of multiple moderate injuries can still leave a car accident victim in a painful and worrisome predicament. Physically recovering from a multitude of injuries can be challenging in many ways. Sure, it can be physically and emotionally trying, but it can also be financially draining.

Take a torn meniscus as an example. Each knee has two menisci, which are pieces of cartilage shaped like the letter “C” and provide cushion between a person’s shinbone and thighbone. Sometimes, when a knee is twisted, turned or subjected to trauma, such as when it strikes a dashboard, that cartilage can tear. This causes pain and swelling, and oftentimes results in limited movement. Although a torn meniscus can be remedied through surgical treatment, it can have an extensive recovery period, and the injury itself can increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Dealing with a knee injury can be painful and costly. Victims who suffer these types of injuries often have to cope with other injuries, too. Torn ligaments, broken bones and serious lacerations can all lead to a complicated recovery. Any one of these injuries may be considered relatively minor, yet, when taken together, they can knock an individual out of commission for some time to come. This can leave them and their family with financial uncertainty due to accumulating medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and lost wages.

Of course, if these injuries are suffered in an accident that is caused by the negligence of another party, then compensation may be recoverable through a personal injury lawsuit. If successful on one of these claims, car accident victims may be able to obtain the medical treatment they need to reach a full recovery in a speedy fashion, while having the financial resources to make ends meet until they can get back on their feet.
